you can safely take all of them and give the entire mug a good scrubbing and/or soaking. ok, after reading some reviews with 1-2 stars due to design flaws I figured I'd sacrifice my mug for the greater good. if you pry it off you can do so without breaking the tabs. Under the button are several parts that lead down to the spring. My coworker got his off easily and is drilling a hole in the middle of the button to allow access to the screw so that in the future it will be easier to take apart and clean. Doing this will reveal a small Philips head screw.
When I first put the parts back together the button no longer clicked into place because I put one of the pieces in upside down (just wanted to note this in case anyone thinks they broke their mug in the process). in reality this mug can be taken apart, cleaned, and then put back together (and maintain its spill proof abilities).Here's the quick run down (from memory): the push button on top is held in place by two small nubs, one on each side. I was quite disgusted by the amount of gunk buildup existed in my mug (granted I use it daily). Remove this screw and then the lower suction cup will come out. Pay attention to the parts since you have to reverse this process to put it together. I will say that I broke my button when I pried it off but I used a lot of force.

this thing doesn't spill or leak and keeps coffee hot for at least an hour and plenty warm enough to drink for about 2-3 hours. amazing. simply the best travel mug i've ever used
Step 4: Remove all parts fron the top of the lid and pay close attention so you can put it back together.Step 5: Try not to throw up when you see the 1/4" thick layer of mildew, bacteria, and mold, you were just drinking out of.Step 6: Clean all parts and reassemble the Mug. Here is how:Step 1: With a flathead screw driver or knife pry off the top of the rubber button that says "OXO".
I love this mug becasue it will keep my coffee hot well into the afternoon and doest spill a drop. I just figured out how to clean the lid.
Luckily i didnt break anything and it is as good as new know. (I have the stainless mug) I have never been able to clean the top and know it is full of disgusting junk.
Instead of buying a new one I decided to just force this one apart with pliers and a screw driver so I will know how to clean the next one. it is about 1/8" thick.Step 2: With a small screw driver unscrew the philips screw that is now exposed from step #1.Step 3: Pull on the round part under the lid that has the large seal and it will seperate from the top of the botton.
Good as new.
Got some for family members too. I lost the first. Oxo Good Grips LiquiSeal Travel Mug This is my second. Only disadvantage is that it is somewhat top heavy. Never had a better mug.IT DOES NOT LEAK.even when I turn a corner fast and it is thrown on the floor of my van.I can put my cream in, put the top on and shake it. I always think stainless steel when buying such an item. Wish it were larger at the bottom. Oh well, take the good with the bad.
Pros - 1) Keeps hot liquids very close to original temperature for hours and hours. Coffee gradually tastes weirder and weirder.2) Impossible to clean. Amazing for keeping tea blazing hot all day.2) Liquid stays put - the seal is great.Cons - 1) Heaven help you if you have some leftover coffee and forget to clean it out immediately. The stainless steel retains the odor and doesn't let go. The liquid compartment is very narrow and my hand can't fit down toward the bottom.Overall - I threw out my first one, but would buy another one only for tea. But if there's a more versatile mug, I'd give it a shot.
